The sample is bombarded with X-rays, and the sample is excited to produce X-ray fluorescence. X-rays usually knock out the inner electrons of the K and L layers of the element atoms, and the holes generated are filled by high-energy outer electrons. The high-energy electrons added to the low-energy orbit radiate the excess energy in the form of X-ray fluorescence. These radiated spectral lines contain the characteristics of various elements. Like fingerprints, and independent of the chemical valence state of the atoms. The intensity of the radiation is proportional to the concentration of the element in the sample.
